Our story

Creating communities through award-winning work

Salt Media does three things: creates magazines and publications (both for Salt and for our clients); crafts creative design for print and digital platforms (think branding etc); and supports membership organisations’ marketing and communications.

Our creative crew of 17 are based in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall; our clients are across the UK and beyond.

Since we launched in 2003, our aim has been to incorporate purpose, vision and values into everything we do, which is why we measure success in three ways: people, planet, and prosperity.

That’s also why talented people stay at Salt Media; some of the team have been with us for over a decade. Not only does that make us feel like a family, but it also keeps skill, knowledge and experience in the business.

Here’s what you need to know about us: we value creativity and strive for excellence; we’re kind, respectful and fun to work with; we look after people and the planet; and we support sustainable creative jobs.

‘Doing good work with good people’

Creating communities

We are proud to be alumni of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme and part of its community. Community is also at the heart of our work, fostering connections and bringing together people with shared passions through storytelling and collaboration.

We aim to inspire, engage, and establish meaningful relationships, making the world a little better through beautiful design and clear communication.

Our history

Jo Rees and Nick Cooper founded Salt Media in 2003 after corporate careers at BBC Worldwide and Thames Water. Leaving London in 1999 and working in Sydney in the early 2000s, they caught the speciality coffee bug and decided to return to the UK to set up a speciality coffee business – seeing an opportunity in what was then a pretty barren coffee landscape in the UK.

In the process of making that happen, a series of events led to the birth of Food Magazine. The project was a success from the start and grew into a broader publishing, marketing and design business. The coffee obsession eventually morphed into the Indy Coffee Guides, and a speciality coffee subscription business called Indy Coffee Box.

Now the Salt Media portfolio goes beyond food, coffee and hospitality to cover a wide range of subjects. However, authenticity, beautiful design and storytelling to build communities run through every piece of work we do. Read our manifesto.
