Veterinary Nursing Journal

Journal of the British Veterinary Nursing Association

Creating the journal that supports veterinary nurses’ professional development.

Veterinary Nursing Journal (VNJ) is an international bimonthly journal for veterinary nurses, published by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). Its aim is to support veterinary nurses’ professional development.

Working closely with the VNJ’s in-team editor, we sub-edit, design and print the journal for the membership organisation. The publication includes peer-reviewed clinical and educational articles, along with softer content dedicated to practice management, wellbeing, news and research.

Reimagining the VNJ

In 2022, our design and editorial team worked with BVNA to reimagine the VNJ, with the first new-look issue launching in March that year. The project included designing a new and engaging look for the journal, which included accessibility features to improve the experience for neurodivergent readers. It also was designed to contain digital-ready design elements for optimisation and online interaction.

The organisation asked us to consider sustainability, so the printed publication uses non-toxic dyes and FSC paper.

Multi-platform format

The VNJ is now available in a sustainable, high-quality print format and also via an interactive online platform that features the latest issue and a searchable digital archive.

Supplementary projects

In addition, we’ve designed an accompanying member email newsletter template, and a brand and editorial style guide.

Ongoing support

We continue to support BVNA with the publishing of six issues of VNJ each year, providing editorial and design services, including scheduling and workflow management across editorial and advertising, supporting the BNVA’s editor with planning and content development, coordinating multiple stakeholders, proofreading and reference checking. In 2025 the journal was a finalist in the category of Best Membership Publication in the PPA Awards.

‘Salt Media helped us deliver a major re-engineering of the VNJ. They guided us through the process, offering advice and showing a keen interest in the profession.
‘They led the design, proofing, and production of the bi-monthly journal, and their team was professional, accommodating and proactive. The new-format journal received excellent feedback from members, partners and advertisers. The digital version launched alongside has increased reach, visibility and added an extra revenue stream. It’s been a real pleasure working with the team.’
